I got the idea from @John_Malecki to use angle iron for the sled and with some lengths of steel rectangular tubing for the rails, I am all set to start flattening larger surfaces.

Mini angle grinder with steel cutting disc
Protective eyewear & earmuffs
1.6 amp welding machine
Auto-darkening welding helmet
Welding gloves
A couple of 2.5mm welding rods
