Hello everyone, I am Huamuz. This is my only channel on YouTube. If you like it, please remember to follow me.
In this video, I showed you the method of making bamboo slips.
Bamboo slips were an important writing material in ancient times before the invention of paper. Splitting bamboo into bamboo strips and using a series of methods to prevent them from rotting, enables writing on bamboo strips and long-term preservation. Connecting bamboo strips with ropes and rolling them into a roll is an ancient book.
In the process of making bamboo slips, I felt like I had traveled back thousands of years to ancient times. Because I also enjoy reading books, I have learned about the lives of ancient people through some ancient books. Bamboo slips record both peace and war. Through the texts passed down by ancient people, we can glimpse how people lived a thousand years ago. The ancestors wrote down the wisdom of history, literature, medicine, agriculture, and other fields into words and recorded them in bamboo slips. Despite the passage of time, through the inheritance of words and books, we have come to understand that every living creature that once existed on this earth has truly existed.
At the end of the video, it felt like I had a dream. I want to take you to experience it together.
About Bamboo Slips:
1,A Brief Overview of the Development of Ancient Writing Materials
How did ancient people record their words before the invention of paper?
Prior to the widespread use of paper, ancient people experimented with various methods: they used oracle bones for divination, nobles inscribed and cast characters on bronze to display their accomplishments, and archaeological findings reveal that our ancestors also carved and painted on ceramics…
It was during the period from the Warring States to the Han Dynasty that bamboo slips emerged as the "national textbook”.
Subsequently, silk books came into existence, and it was not until the Eastern Han Dynasty, when CaiLun refined paper making techniques, that paper books entirely supplanted bamboo slips during the Wei and Jin dynasties.
Bamboo slips bore witness to the succession of dynasties and the ebb and flow of cultures from the Shang and Zhou dynasties to the Han and Jin dynasties.
From the scarcity of oracle bones, the cumbersomeness of bamboo slips, to the portability of paper, each upgrade in writing materials encapsulates the wisdom of successive generations.
2,The use of bamboo slips
The content of the bamboo slips encompasses a wide range of subjects, including history, literature, agriculture, medicine, etiquette, correspondence, military affairs, household registration documents, and more, making them veritable "social encyclopedias" of their time. They contain records of the authentic lives of soldiers, officials, and common people, as well as a wealth of wisdom and experience distilled from ancient civilizations, classical laws, and literary thoughts.
These slips represent the longest-used and oldest writing material in China.
3,The method of making bamboo slips
First, split the bamboo into thin slices. Use a bamboo scraper to remove the outer green layer, leaving the slices smooth and flat.
Ancient people who wished to write on bamboo slips had to subject the bamboo to special treatment. Given bamboo's high moisture content, it was necessary to dry it over fire to prevent mold and deformation before writing. During the roasting process, bamboo would exude numerous droplets, a phenomenon referred to as "sweating the green."
The treated bamboo would transition from green to yellow, a process also known as "fixing the green."
By employing high-temperature sterilization through steaming, the toughness of the bamboo is enhanced, and it becomes resistant to insect infestation.
After processing, people would write on the inner layer of the bamboo slips, as the outer layer was too smooth for ink adherence.
To prevent ink from smudging and to prolong the lifespan of the writings, the bamboo slices were coated with substances like fish glue. Subsequently, the bamboo strips were bound together with ropes, and after inscribing the characters, they were rolled up and stored, forming scrolls that constituted books.
If a mistake was made on a bamboo slip, one could simply scrape it off with a small knife and rewrite it, a practice that was notably eco-friendly.
