How to calculate Empirical Formula? 3 Easy Steps

Following are the three easy steps to calculate the empirical formula of any compound.

1) Highlight the given atoms given in the question. Also, write down their relative atomic mass.

2) Find the number of moles of each element. Divide the mass composition or percentage composition of each element by their respective relative atomic mass masses.

3) Find out the smallest whole number. Then divide all the numbers by that smallest whole number to get smallest whole number ratio.

Use these three steps to find the empirical formula of any compound.
