Pentax MZ and ZX series of cameras are notorious for breaking due to a design flaw where Pentax used a plastic cog for the mirror motor. Overtime, this breaks in half due to the stresses of driving the mirror.
Fortunatelz, some MZ and ZX cameras have brass cogs instead. Here's a quick video to help you identify if your Pentax MZ or ZX camera has a brass cog.
My theory is that MZ and ZX cameras produced after 2002 have factory brass cogs.
