On December 6, 1917, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, the French cargo ship Mont-Blanc, loaded with explosives, collided with the Norwegian vessel Imo. The collision sparked a fire on Mont-Blanc, leading to a massive explosion at 9:04:35 am.
The blast released energy equivalent to approximately 2.9 kilotons of TNT, killing around 1,782 people and injuring about 9,000 others. A tsunami followed, and the explosion was felt as far as Cape Breton and Prince Edward Island.
Entire neighborhoods were destroyed, and relief efforts were hampered by a subsequent blizzard. The disaster led to significant changes in emergency response protocols and maritime regulations.
