Episode 35 of Piping Up with Stephen Regec
Join us inside the historic sanctuary of Derry Presbyterian Church in Hershey, Pennsylvania, for a program that highlights the majestic tones of the church’s 45-rank, 2,794-pipe Aeolian-Skinner pipe organ (Opus 1132), originally built in 1951 and fully restored and installed at Derry by the A. Thompson-Allen Company in 2020.
The organ is played by Daniel Dorty, Organist and Director of Music at Derry Presbyterian since September 2022. A graduate of Messiah University, Daniel brings both skill and deep musical passion to his role. Whether commanding the console or transitioning to the church’s Steinway concert grand piano, his musicianship reflects a profound love for sacred music and the worship environment it enhances.
This video also features a special moment at the conclusion of the program as Stephen Regec joins Daniel for a hymn duet—bringing together the warmth of the acoustic guitar and the grandeur of the pipe organ in a powerful and moving expression of faith and music.
About the Organ
Originally installed at the Church of the Redeemer in New Haven, Connecticut, Aeolian-Skinner Opus 1132 is a landmark instrument in American organ building. After decades of service, the organ was expertly restored and relocated to Derry Presbyterian, where its musical voice now fills a space rich in history and tradition.
About Derry Presbyterian Church
Established in 1729, Derry Presbyterian Church is one of the oldest churches in Pennsylvania. The congregation’s historic Session House, built in 1732, still stands today and is the oldest building in the Hershey area. With support from Milton S. Hershey in 1929, the church preserved this iconic structure, which remains a symbol of enduring faith and community.
Derry Presbyterian has long held close ties to the Hershey and Reese families, who considered Derry their home church. Today, the congregation remains active in worship, education, and mission, continuing its nearly 300-year legacy.
Channel Intro music is brought to you by Walker Technical Organ Company and Daniel Umholtz.
