Bonnie begins by reflecting on the words of civil rights leader Pastor James Lawson, before starting her journey in Philadelphia, where she interviews attendees of the Second Young People’s Continental Congress. The four-day convention brings together teachers and high school students from across the country to walk the halls where the nation’s founders drafted, debated, and adopted the documents that shaped America. As students explore how the founding fathers, despite deep disagreements, found common ground to create a new nation, a central question emerges: what happens when shared values, like “liberty”, mean different things to different people?
Bonnie continues her journey in Denver, where she explores the gun debate through the Firearms Injury Prevention Initiative (FIPI), founded by Dr. Emmy Betz at the University of Colorado Medical School. The program works to bridge divides around gun violence. There, Bonnie speaks with Amanda Wilcox, whose 19-year-old daughter was killed by gun violence, and Edgar Atillion, CEO of Guns for Everyone. Though they hold different views on gun control policy, both serve on FIPI’s advisory board and share a common goal: reducing gun-related deaths.
In both Philadelphia and Denver, the episode shows how deeper conversations across differences can help America move closer to its founding ideals.
