Members of Nigeria's Supreme Military Council had what a communique termed a "routine meeting" in Lagos following the decision of the Eastern Region to takeover all key federal installations in the region including ports, railways, telecommunications and broadcasting.
The Eastern Region wants a de-centralised, confederal system of government while the military leaders of the other regions insist on a strong central government.
On the same day at the naval base in Apapa, Lagos, the Chief of Naval Staff, Commodore Joseph Wey presided over a passing out parade of 100 non-commissioned naval personnel who he told would be required to go immediately on "national assignment".
