The Saitō Goma Fire Ritual involves ascetic monks performing various ceremonies to establish a sacred, purified boundary. Within this sacred space, they pile and burn brushwood. The monks then recite wishes written on goma sticks before casting them into the flames. Once the fire has subsided, worshippers who have come to pay their respects also walk over the embers, praying for the fulfilment of their various wishes.
Inasa Shrine, enshrined halfway up Mount Inasa, has existed since ancient times. Entering the Heian period, Kūkai founded Inasa Taihei-ji Temple, where Inasa Daimyōjin was established as its guardian deity, becoming a major sacred site known as one of the Sixteen Temples of Shingon Buddhism. Traces of Shinto-Buddhist syncretism remain to this day. The Shitō Goma ritual is jointly conducted by priests of Inasa Shrine and Shingon Buddhist monks, held annually in late January within the precincts of Gyokusenbō .
