This remote shutter system works with a variety of Sony cameras, including two different cables with both the micro-usb and Sony proprietary connectors. The receiver unit can be detached from the camera and used as a wired shutter (the coiled cable stretches out to 3-4 feet). Or, you can mount it to the camera's cold shoe (or any 1/4-20 stud on a camera cage) and use the hand-held shutter unit remotely.
The receiver requires 2x AAA batteries (not provided) and the transmitter uses a single (provided) CR2032 coin cell battery.
Range is at least 100' in line of sight situations. The remote has a half-push to focus, full push to release the shutter. If you hold the shutter button down until the red light turns off on the transmitter, the receiver will "lock" with the shutter button depressed until you press it a second time, allowing you to use bulb mode or continuous shooting mode.
It also has a 2-second delay button, which allows you to trigger the remote, quickly drop it into a pocket, and have a natural hand position if you are in the image. [The manual says 3 seconds, but the button has a "2" on it, and it triggers in 2 seconds.]
The only thing I didn't like about the receiver unit is that the cold shoe attachment only works in two directions (not all 4). You can either have the unit hang out above the lens (with the cord sticking out the back) or have the cord stick out the front with the unit sticking back blocking your access to the viewfinder. [Combined with the extra long cord that doubles as a remote wired flash cord, either can be annoying.] I personally wanted to mount it sticking out to the side, but was unable to do so as the cold shoe only fits the slot in one direction.
I was able to completely disassemble the unit, unscrew the cold shoe foot, and re-screw it back on (somewhat twisted 90 degrees, except it was blocked by factory keying, so it didn't QUITE fit right....but it's functional.)
