"Fort Providence (Sacred Heart) Indian Residential School" (a.k.a.: "Our Lady of Providence Convent") was operated by the Roman Catholic Church in Fort Providence, Northwest Territories, Canada, between 1867 and June 30th 1960. It was located on the north bank of the Mackenzie River, a short distance inland from Great Slave Lake and 300 kilometres west of Yellowknife. The residential school building was three stories high with two adjoining wings. The first floor contained a girls’ dormitory and separate recreation rooms for boys and girls. The second floor housed a classroom, a chapel and staff residences. The third floor contained separate dormitories for boys and girls. The building also had a kitchen, dining room, laundry, vegetable cellar and ice-house and was surrounded by a large garden. Fort Providence Indian Residential School was also known by the following aliases (names): "Providence IRS (Alberta Regional)", "Sacred Heart Convent (Holy Angels)" -1896, "Sacred Heart Boarding School, Fort Providence" - 1904, "Providence Boarding School" - 1916, "Providence Mission Indian Residential School" - 1927, "Providence Indian Residential School" - 1929, "Providence Mission Residential School" - 1933, "Providence Mission Roman Catholic Residential School (Holy Angels)" - 1938, "Providence Residential School" - 1951 and "Our Lady of Providence Convent". Children who resided at the Fort Providence Indian Residential School came from 'at least' the following communities: Fort Providence, Fort Wrigley, Fort Simpson, Fort Norman, Norman Wells, Slave Lake Tribe, Good Hope and Peel River. At its highest level of enrolment, in the 1958-1959 school year, there were almost 120 child residents.
