As of January 1, 2026, Canada’s Start-Up Visa (SUV) Program is paused—and IRCC stopped accepting new commitment certificates after December 31, 2025. If you’re still planning your Canadian PR around “getting a commitment certificate in 2026,” you’re planning around a door that’s shut.
There’s a narrow exception: if you already have a valid 2025 commitment certificate, you can still submit your PR application—but only until June 30, 2026.
So what actually works in 2026 for serious entrepreneurs?
The real shift is work permit first → operate the business → prove measurable benefit → transition to PR, often through a Provincial Nominee Program (PNP). In this video, I break down how the modern strategy is being assessed, why “paper-only” business files are dying, and where most applicants get rejected (temporary intent, passive structures, weak funds documentation, and businesses that don’t require your real presence).
