The metronome is an online device or application used to indicate the tempo or pulse of musical compositions. It regularly produces a signal, visual or acoustic, that enables a musician to maintain a constant pulse when performing a musical work.
To define the speed at which a piece of music should be played, the duration time of a figure is set. If the person writing the composition wants the tempo to be one quarter note per second, they will write the indication "quarter note = 60" at the top of the score of the work, thus indicating the number of quarter notes that must be sounded in one minute. This will serve to adjust the device to this value.
Most music students and teachers use a metronome for practice, in order to adhere to a standard tempo. In the past, Italian words such as "allegro", "vivace", "andante" or "presto" were used to establish the tempos in a composition, but this practice has been abandoned in favor of more precise values for the tempo of execution.
The following table sets out the different approximate settings of the metronome according to the indications of the Italian-language tempo.
