What is a Mazhab (a school of thought)
The word comes from the Arabic root dh-h-b, which means "to go." Therefore, a Madhhab is literally "a way of going" or a path taken by scholars to reach a legal conclusion
A Madhhab is not a "sect" or a different version of Islam. All major schools agree on 100% of the core creed (Aqeedah) such as the oneness of God, the finality of the Prophet ﷺ, and the pillars of Islam.
Instead, a Madhhab is a methodology. Think of it like a "legal lens." While every scholar looks at the Quran and Sunnah, they use different tools to interpret them when a specific situation isn't explicitly detailed. These tools include:
• Ijma (Consensus): What the companions or scholars agreed upon.
• Qiyas (Analogy): Applying a known ruling to a new, similar situation.
• Urf (Custom): Considering local traditions that don't contradict Islam.
• Maslahah (Public Interest): Rulings based on what benefits the community.
