As part of a collaborative effort to reduce wildfire risk, targeted grazing is making a meaningful impact across the City American Canyon. Funded by Napa County and the City of American Canyon, over 400 acres were treated by the end of 2025 through this collaborative effort— this video highlights the work that took place at Newell Open Space Preserve.

The American Canyon Fire Protection District, in partnership with Napa Firewise and Napa County, has identified priority areas where grazing provides critical defensible space for neighborhoods and reduces fuels in hard-to-reach terrain. This work spans key open spaces throughout the city, including Newell Open Space Preserve and multiple additional treatment zones.

Targeted grazing is one piece of a larger community wildfire protection strategy. If you live near one of these areas, it's a great time to evaluate your own defensible space — a well-maintained property works hand-in-hand with efforts like this to improve safety for everyone.
