Harald Genzmer (1909–2007) was a German composer whose work was shaped by a synthesis of tradition and modernity. He studied under Paul Hindemith (1895–1963), whose influence can be seen in Genzmer’s clearly structured yet freely shaped tonal language. Genzmer aligned himself with the concept of "Gebrauchsmusik"—music that is not only artistically demanding but also practical and accessible for performers. His style oscillates between neoclassicism, free tonality, and occasional impressionistic elements.
The Prelude (Präludium) under consideration is taken from Das Neue Klavierbuch (Volume 2), a three-part collection published by Schott (Ed 6011/II). This series aimed to make 20th-century piano literature accessible to players of varying levels. Genzmer’s Präludium is a calm piece marked Andante. The music unfolds in flowing wave-like movements, creating a continuous, almost improvisatory atmosphere. The harmonic language is modal, a hallmark of Genzmer’s style, and produces a soundscape that is a successful blend of medieval atmosphere, Impressionism, and Neoclassicism. The chords and harmonic progressions reinforce this character, while Hindemith’s influence can be observed in the clear voice leading and frequently open harmonic structures. Subtle dynamic gradations and delicate rhythmic variations further enhance the expressive quality of the piece.
