Remove Bicycle Chain Packing Grease: Quick, Efficient, Eco Friendly

In a previous video in the upper right, we make the case for remove bicycle chain packing grease from new bicycle chains (see our video in the upper right). the new chain factory grease is there to protect the chain from rust and corrosion while stored until sale and NOT as a chain lubricant. It's sticky and picks up road grime and dirt that will grind down your chain faster than any lubricant you use. We previously suggest using Pure Gum Turpentine to strip the factory grease but decided to look for something less toxic and more environmentally friendly. This is also a reason not to use gasoline or kerosene.

You'll need:
1. A small container in which to place the chain
2. Small brush such old tooth brushes as a chain cleaning tools
3. An environmentally friendly non-toxic cleaner - we're going to use Simple Green which is one of the cheaper bike degreaser cleaner and can be found at your local grocery
5. Some soap such as Dawn Liquid and water
6. I use some neoprene gloves to protect my hands - not always necessary but a good habit to follow

This is what we do:
1. Place the chain in the container and spray liberally with Simple Green
2. Shake the chain in the container with the Simple Green and then brush all surfaces with the toothbrush
3. Shake the chain again as in the video
4. Recycle the Simple Green since it can be reused until it so dirty it needs to be discarded
5. Rinse, wash with soap and water, wipe dry. As a hack: I find if I hang it up using an old bent metal hanger, it's easier to dry with a microfiber cloth.
Now you're ready to install the chain! Lubricate the chain using the bicycle lube of your choice.

Same procedure for bicycle chain cleaning in cases where the chain has lots of grime and you have a removable master link installed to enable chain removal.
