Kris's first CMA award at the Grand Ol' Opry in 1970 for "Song of the Year" with "Sunday Morning Coming Down".
Since I read about it I have had these pictures in my mind of Kris receiving his first award after all these years of struggling. It's so exciting to watch the original, thank you a lot, TJ, for sharing it with me.

At the annual Country Music Association Awards 1970, Kris was nominated in a number of categories, but the organizers demonstrated their view of his chances of winning anything by placing him at the back of the Opry House. Then when his name was announced (to the surprise of most people and Kris himself) Kris snapped his head back so sharply that he cracked it on the wooden pews at the back and nearly knocked himself out. Marty Robbins, sitting nearby, urged Kris to get moving. Kris was dazed and unsure of exactly how to get to the stage and so took some time to make his way up there to receive his award. Some outraged traditionalists charged that Kris showed great disrespect for such a grand occasion by his appearance, wearing jeans and his crumpled suede jacket (the one from Cisco Pike!) without a tie and with this already long hair... Some reports even described him bearded, but that was incorrect, he was clean shaven as you can see :-) ...
And he was shyly hiding behind his hair for his few words of acceptance. Just this nice little lovely smile at the end, probably at Johnny Cash who was sitting near the stage ...
To me he looked so handsome in his clothes. Did not need any tuxedo to look nice. This white pullover, the nice jacket and his hair is shining clean. What did they want from him??
I believe they were just a little bit jealous because they knew their time was over and this guy would make it. He had been working as a janitor in the studio before. Knowing that of course might have been hard to some people. And I also think Kris often was treated unfairly by the press.

When Kris received his Nashville Songwriter's Association award the same year it was reported in the local press that "While his fellow songwriters gave him a standing ovation, Kristofferson showed them only the shaggy back of his head. He was crying." ...

Bei der jährlichen Auszeichnungsveranstaltung der Country Music Association CMA 1970 erhielt Kris seinen ersten Preis. Nach jahrelangem „Kämpfen fürs tägliche Brot" muss das ein sehr emotionaler Augenblick für ihn gewesen sein, sicher auch Genugtuung, endlich bewiesen zu haben, dass er auf dem richtigen Weg war.
Kris war in mehreren Kategorien nominiert, doch die Veranstalter demonstrierten ihre Ansicht auf seine Gewinnchancen, indem sie ihn ganz hinten platzierten. Als dann sein Name verlesen wurde, nicht nur zur Überraschung vieler Anwesender, sondern auch zu seiner eigenen, setzte er sich fast selbst k.o., als er vor Schreck mit dem Kopf gegen die hölzerne Wand hinter sich stieß. Marty Robbins, der daneben saß, musste Kris erst drängen, sich nach vorn zu bewegen. Kris war noch ganz benommen und musste sich den Weg zur Bühne erst noch „erarbeiten", und brauchte so ein bisschen länger...
Einige Traditionalisten empörten sich, dass Kris gegenüber dieser großen Veranstaltung keinen Respekt erweisen würde, so wie er aussah: Jeans und Jacket ohne Schlips statt eines feinen Anzugs und dann diese langen Haare. Einige Berichte beschrieben ihn später sogar als „bärtig", aber das stimmte nicht wie man ja sehen kann - er ist sauber rasiert!
Seine kurzen Dankesworte waren vor allem an Johnny Cash gerichtet, dafür, dass der seiner Karriere einen gewaltigen Schub gegeben hatte. Johnny saß ganz vorn, und Kris schenkte wohl ihm dieses wunderschöne Lächeln.
Als Kris im selben Jahr dann den Preis der Nashville Songschreiber Association erhielt, war in der örtlichen Presse zu lesen:
„Während seine Songschreiberkollegen ihn mit stehenden Ovationen ehrten, zeigte Kris ihnen nur seinen zotteligen Kopf von hinten. Weil er weinte..."
