Here’s a look at the Sagana Northern Railway (SNRY)—a CTC-controlled, owner-operated railroad—as we build and operate a coal mine shifter serving the Salt Creek Mine.
On the SNRY, mine shifters like this are part of daily railroad operations, governed by centralized traffic control and integrated directly into the timetable. These jobs aren’t exceptions—they’re how coal moves from the mines to power plants and steel mills across the Midwest.
While this is a physical model railroad, the equipment, movements, signaling, and decisions reflect real-world railroad practice and 1980s-era coal operations, including CTC dispatching, scheduled work windows, and coordinated train movements.
🔍 More detailed railroad operations videos are coming this summer, including:
• CTC and dispatcher-style decision making
• All trains run as needed based on customers and the contracts we have with them.
• Yard and mine job workflows
• How mine shifters fit into system-wide railroad movements
We host monthly OPs and every month is a new year as we change from 1980 to 1988 and skip the odd years each month to show the progress of railroading in the 1980s.
