So over the last couple of years I have built an email list of thousands from free traffic of thousands. So why did I decide to ditch the list and start again? How to build an email list is really important for any online success. Building a WordPress site is not enough.

An email list is key to any business. You want to build a list of loyal customers, who are willing to buy from you. Maybe not on their first interaction - but at some time. Building a loyal list is all about building trust between you and your customers, and providing them with good quality content. So that when you have that trust, they are more willing to "buy" a product or service from YOU.

I did this - and was making good money from my list. So why, on earth did I decide to cull my list - and start again!
2 things happened to me
1 - my Autoresponder "Get Response" had a massive spam attack, and went down for nearly a week (the same attack happended to other autoresponder companies as well - so this was not specifically targeted at Get Response". So for a week I lost functionality - and this was right in the middle of a massive launch.
I used this as an opprtunity to review my list.

2 - although I was getting around 10 sign ups a days - I was suspicious of some of the emails. They had something of a "robot" about them, which made me think they are being generated by some auto-bot. My suspicions were confirmed when Get Response said that I had nearly 2000 "blacklisted" contacts. This is emails that have been proved to be spam or useless emails. 2000!!! And yet, I was still making sales.

So this made me think about where those sales were coming from, and I was surprised. You may have heard of something called the 80:20 theory - the Pareto Theory.
This was an economic theory that states 80% of the wealth is owned by 20% of the people.
But - it is now applied to many things in life and business.
One of these is that 80% of your business may come from just 20% of your customers. So doesn't it make sense to concentrate on those 20% of customers - and ditch the rest.

Radical I know - but this is also something I had read in the brilliant "4 Hour Week" by Tim Ferris.

Also, email lists suffer from something called "list fatigue". This is when people on the email lists no longer even read your emails.

QUALITY NOT QUANTITY

So with all these things in mind it was time for radical action. I had realised it is better to have a few loyal - willing - customers on your list, then 1000s of pointless emails.
I had Get Response delete all the blacklisted addresses (after all, I'm paying for the amount of people on this list - whether they are spam or not!) - and then changed my autoresponder to Aweber.
I imported the remainder of my list from Get Rsponse to Aweber - but asked them to opt-in again. This way only ensuring that I had people who still wanted to be on the list.

I changed my optin form - and selected "double opt-in". Previously my list was built on the basis of NO optin - which secures QUANTITY but NOT QUALITY. Double optin is where, after a customer signs up to my FREE membership site, they are sent an email asking whether they want to optin to the email list.
Again, this extra step filters out the tyre kickers - and just gets people who are more keen, and really want to get what you have to offer.

So my list is dramatically smaller, but growing by about 3 to 5 a day (at the moment). But the sales are still very similar to before.

Also, I still have a good FACEBOOK members, YouTube subscribers who regularly get content from me.

So in conclusion

1. Take time to spring clean your email list. (see where the sales are coming from) - do you have list fatigue.
2. Single optin or double optin - what suits your business
3. Other sources of members FACEBOOK Page, YouTube Channel Subcribers
