Did you know your favorite burger topping started as fermented fish guts in ancient China? 🐟😲
In today’s video, we’re peeling back the label on the history of Ketchup. We’ll travel from the docks of Fujian to the tables of Victorian England, and finally to the factories of Pennsylvania to find out how a salty, fishy brine transformed into the sweet, red sauce Americans love today.
In this video, you will learn:
The Ancient Origins: How the Chinese Hokkien word kê-tsiap (fermented fish sauce) kicked off a global condiment craze.
The "Impulses": Why the British tried to recreate the sauce using mushrooms, walnuts, and oysters (and zero tomatoes!).
The Tomato Revolution: The 1812 recipe by James Mease that finally added "Love Apples" to the mix.
The Heinz Hero: How Henry J. Heinz changed the game in 1876 by adding vinegar and sugar to replace dangerous preservatives like coal tar.

🤯 5 Mind-Blowing Ketchup Facts:
It was sold as medicine: In the 1830s, "Tomato Pills" were sold to cure indigestion and even jaundice!
The "57" is a lie: When Heinz came up with the "57 Varieties" slogan, he already had over 60 products. He just thought 5 and 7 were lucky numbers.
Speed limit: Heinz ketchup exits the glass bottle at exactly 0.028 miles per hour. If it pours faster, it's rejected at the factory!
Catsup vs. Ketchup: There is no difference! "Ketchup" became the standard largely because Heinz chose that spelling to stand out from competitors.
Gold cleaner: The acid in ketchup makes it a surprisingly good polish for copper and silverware.
