Scenes from the new Sydney Light Rail City & South East Lines at various points around the system.
Trams returned to the streets of Sydney from December 2019 when the L2 Randwick Line opened for traffic, with the L3 branch to Kingsford opening in April 2020. Aside from George Street which last saw trams in 1958, other parts of the former Sydney Tramways have been re-used by this new system. These include Cleveland Street Surry Hills, the segregated right of way along Anzac Parade beside the Moore Park area (Sydney Cricket Ground, Football Stadium and old showgrounds). The alignment along Eddy Avenue near Central and Allison Road Randwick is however different from the old system. The new lines intersect with the original L1 Inner West light railway at George & Hay Streets where stock movements between the two lines is possible.
The system operates coupled pairs of Alstom Citadis 305 series cars, and north of Town Hall uses a central contact strip for current collection which is only activated when a vehicle is present.
There are proposals to extend the L3 route further south to Maroubra where trams last served the area on the original system until February 1961.
