Nottuswarams (also spelled Nottuswaras or Notuswaras) are a beautiful and unique set of Carnatic compositions that blend Western (European) and Indian classical musical styles. They were composed by Muthuswami Dikshitar (1775–1835), one of the Trinity of Carnatic music.
Here’s a detailed overview:
🎵 Meaning
The term “Nottuswaram” comes from “Note Swaram” — meaning “songs based on Western musical notes.”
These compositions use simple swaras (Sa, Ri, Ga, Ma, Pa, Da, Ni) without gamakas (ornamentations), making them sound more Western.
🎼 Musical Style
Based on Western major scales, similar to the Ionian mode (C major scale).
Composed mostly in Raga Shankarabharanam, but rendered in a very plain style.
Tala (rhythm) is simple — often Adi tala (8 beats) or Rupaka tala (6 beats).
No complex sangatis or improvisations — perfect for beginners.
🕊️ Language and Themes
The lyrics are in Sanskrit, dedicated to Goddess Kamalamba and other deities.
Though the tunes sound Western (like English or Scottish melodies), the themes are devotional and Indian.
🎶 Famous Nottuswarams
Here are some well-known ones:
Śāntōdari (Sāntōdari Kamalāmbikē)
Kamala Jālochana
Varashiva Balam
Santatam Pāhimaam
Pārvatī Pātim
Vara Vīna Mridu Pāni
Vande Meenākshi
Rākṣasāsura Samhārine
Govinda Mādhava
Sāntatam Pāhimaam Sangīta Vādya
🎻 Western Connection
Dikshitar was influenced by British band music heard during the colonial period in India (military bands in Madras and Pondicherry).
He skillfully adapted those Western tunes into Indian compositions — preserving Indian lyrics and spirituality
