Antonio Nathaniel Davenport Jr., better known as Lil Tony, was once seen as the next rap star out of Durham, North Carolina. As a member of the rap trio 83 Babies, signed under an Atlantic Records imprint, his future looked bright. But behind the music, Lil Tony was deeply tied to the Eight Trey Gangster Crips—and in 2019, that double life ended in tragedy.
After being jumped and humiliated on camera by rivals, Lil Tony and fellow gang members set out for revenge. But instead of hitting their intended target, they opened fire on the wrong SUV, killing 9-year-old Z’yon Person and wounding another child.
What followed was one of Durham’s most shocking cases. Prosecutors used surveillance footage, an ankle monitor, ballistics, and even Lil Tony’s own attempts to cover his tracks to prove he fired the fatal shots. In 2022, he was sentenced to life in federal prison, with the courts later upholding his conviction.
