I am back in Derbyshire, and I am back with Phil and Nikita.
Derbyshire has been mined for lead since Roman times, but the particular area of our explore, just outside Matlock, was extensively mined from the 1540s onwards,
In episode one of a trilogy of lead mine explores, we manage to find, and get into the little known 'Dunsley Springs' lead mine, before heading up the ridge to explore the vast lead workings of Bonsall Leys.
We find field after field of lead shafts, some left wide open, and even some cranes left over from a 1940s Fluorite mine.
The location is stunning and I would recommend a visit, but would avoid taking young children as many of the shaft caps are worn away or collapse entirely.
