two jeffreys. same level of horror, and very different aftermaths.
when netflix released Monster: the Jeffrey Dahmer story, a lot of victims’ families said it felt like old wounds were being opened again. they weren’t consulted. their loved ones’ stories were dramatized. and it hurt.
now with the release of jeffrey epstein–related documents, i’m seeing a different tension. people are worried about retraumatizing survivors — but many survivors themselves are asking for transparency. they’re saying secrecy caused more harm.
so....what’s the difference?
as a filipino counseling student studying trauma, i wanted to slow this down and look at it through a trauma-informed lens. what does retraumatization actually mean? how is trauma-informed care different from trauma-focused treatment? and how does format — dramatized series vs documentary vs legal documents — change the impact?
everything discussed refers to alleged acts based on public reporting unless proven in a court of law.
this is just me trying to think carefully about how we consume stories involving real harm.
