Chalo Chanakya became a symbolic protest of the 125 mangrove trees which were cut late last December 2023 in TS Chanakya Lake, Navi Mumbai in India.
This beautiful bio diversity and a paradise on earth stretching 400 hectares of mangroves and wetlands are always under pressure for residential apartments and golf courses to come up.
Thanks to awakened common citizens of Navi Mumbai, led by Sunil & Shruti Agarwal of the Save Navi Mumbai Environment, they were able to fend of builders for some time with Bombay High Court ordering that the area cannot be used for residential, commercial buildings or complexes in this sensitive Coastal regulatory zone 1 ( CRZ 1) way back in 2016.
The desire to plot the area and sell off remained paramount with the builders continues to date with the builders appealing to the apex Supreme Court of India.
The builders in total disregard to the Bombay High Court order continues to play mischief by trying to build roads, cut mangrove trees, play with the levels of water in the inter tidal lakes of DPS, Talawe and TS Chanakya, so that hundreds and thousands of greater and lesser flamingos do not find their roosting place during the high tides.
The city of Navi Mumbai has been named Flamingo City by the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), but with the way the things are happening on a daily basis, very soon this rich habitat and bio diversity of the wetlands will be lost to concrete jungles.
Chalo Chanakya (Let’s go to Chanakya) is clarion call to humans to protect every tree, every grass land, every forest, every wetland, every mountain, every stream, every lake, every sea before each one is asked by their children - "Why did you not do something about it"?
