In this section, we cover the definitions for many terms used to describe lichens. We begin with the thallus (the body of the lichen), which has three main growth forms (crustose, foliose - have lobes, fruticose - have branches). Other growth forms include leprose, filamentous, squamulose. Lichens can be identified based on their fruiting bodies, including sexual apothecia, sexual perithecia, asexual isidia, soredia, soralia. Other noteworthy structures include rhizines (on the underside), cilia (on the edges), cyphellae (pores), tomentum (fuzzy), and pruina (powdery).
