Montenegro is a Balkan country in Southern Europe, bordered by the Adriatic Sea and bordering Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Kosovo4 and Albania. The capital is Podgorica (170 000 inhabitants), the former royal capital is Cetinje which also holds the title of "capital of the throne" (prestonica). Montenegro applied for membership of the European Union in 2008.

Kotor is a city and a municipality of Montenegro. In 2003, the city had 1,331 inhabitants and the municipality 23,411.

The old town of Kotor, surrounded by an impressive defensive wall, is particularly well preserved and classified. The historical-cultural and natural region of Kotor is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
