I had an epic week full of fingerboarding!
I went down to Palm Springs to visit my parents. Well, on Sunday, Feb 5th I decided to drive a couple hours to Santa Ana, to check out the Slushcult Mini Mart! Located in Historic Santa Ana, I knew my mom would enjoy checking out the neighborhood and see what the Mini Mart is doing!
Man, it was such a fun time for both of us! We met up with the Slushgod, Scott B from Dynamic, Stefan from Devise Fingerboards and Alex Garcia aka Nexismfb. I always love seeing Scott! And it was great to see Stefan again. But I’m super psyched to be able to meet both the Slushgod and Alex after following both for years!
My mom could not stop talking about how amazing it was to see people of all ages enjoying the Slushcult parks, including families with children and pets. I’m unsure how the neighborhood was before, but Historic Santa Ana is so cool, and Slushgod picked the perfect location for the Mini Mart!
My mom and I each purchased a shirt from the Minimart. I also picked up an online order of a Blackriver Round Rail Low, and 2 packs of FBS! Well, Slushgod also threw in some extra goodies for me. A pack of That Tape, a beanie, and a bag to hold it all in!
Scott from Dynamic was also there. He hooked me up with two sets of Dynamic Trucks, one regular and one special edition, as well as the Dynamic Minis to try. I’ll be unboxing these in a separate video and will do a full review on all three products!
As I mentioned in my History of Fingerboarding Stores, opening a brick and mortar store is the most impactful thing one can do for fingerboarding. Slushcult Mini Mart is much more than just a fingerboarding store, as the brand is a lifestyle, streetwear brand first and foremost, there’s a heavy amount of fingerboarding goods there within the mini skateshop, and so many parks! With all the foot traffic walking through that part of town on the weekend, I imagine Slushgod has introduced fingerboarding to a multitude of people! Huge shout out and thanks to him!
I can’t wait to visit the shop again, hopefully for a large event next time!
Well, the following Friday, I hopped on a train with my friend Stephen aka PNWFB and had a relaxing 6 hour ride down to Salem, Oregon to attend The Return of the Fingerboard Jam! It was a beautiful journey, and a great way to travel between locations. Normally it’s a 4.5 hour drive but traffic can make it a little stressful!
We arrived that afternoon, and ate dinner at a local pub, and took an Uber to the hotel. That evening we walked down to Walmart where we stumbled on some Hot Wheel fingerboards. You can watch my unboxing and first impressions by hitting the button on the top right now!
The following morning, we strolled 35 minutes down to the event venue to help setup! It was great to see all the old friends I made last time, and meet new folks! The Bad Space is the perfect location for a fingerboarding event. Great food and brew, fun AV system with lighting, and you can even open up a garage door. Shout out to Matador and the team from The Bad Space who were so helpful! Also, that food runner was a champ!
Speaking of food, I had this crispy chicken sandwich that was incredible.
For the event itself, there was a total of 6 contests, 3 for the AMs (16 and under) and 3 for the pros. The contests were Best Run, Best Trick and Game of Skate! The Best Run contest was performed on the Finger Everything park, made specifically for the event! Finger Everything is out of Spokane, and Chase drove the 8+ hours to attend! Much love to him!
The Best Trick Contest was performed on the FuktFingers doubleset, which was made by Justin who lives up in Olympia. His doublesets are so epic and solid!
Game of Skate was performed on a table made by Luke, who actually threw it together the night before. He made the table with a piece of slate in the middle which is where competitors would pop their tricks on. Such an ingenious idea!
