An Irish research team has made a groundbreaking discovery, engineering bacteria to detect 'forever chemicals' in the environment. These genetically modified bacteria, developed by the Biosensei project, can sense Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and transmit data instantly. This innovation offers a faster, more efficient way to locate and address the growing issue of PFAS contamination in soil and water.
The Tyndall Institute at University College Cork leads this project, collaborating with seven European institutions. Their invention is a tiny device containing bacteria that react to PFAS, triggering sensors that send real-time data. This technology is set to revolutionize the detection and removal of these harmful chemicals from our environment.
The team is preparing for field tests in the Netherlands and Ireland, and the potential applications are vast. Prof Alan O'Riordan highlights the technology's appeal to wastewater treatment plants and its adaptability to detect various contaminants. This development is a significant step towards protecting public health and the environment from the dangers of 'forever chemicals'.
