This history of the British empire is of course controversial. Today, how are institutions, from the BBC to our schools and universities, educating people about this topic?
Professor Lawrence Goldman is concerned that we have lost the skill of presenting topics on Britain’s past in a balanced, nuanced way. I talk to Lawrence about the critique he and other historians recently sent to the BBC, which found its way into the leaked internal report by Michael Prescott about a lack of impartiality at the BBC. We also discuss a set of recent programmes very recently commissioned by the BBC about Britain’s colonial past, the arguments for and against ‘decolonising’ history curricula, and the importance of trial by jury in light of the government’s plans to reduce the number of cases tried this way.
