Witness history come to life as rare photographs from the Anglo-Zulu War are restored and animated in stunning detail
The Anglo-Zulu War took place in 1879 between the British Empire and the Zulu Kingdom. The conflict was driven by Britain’s desire to gain control over South Africa and subjugate the independent Zulu state.
The war began with a British invasion, but in January the Zulus achieved a major victory at the Battle of Isandlwana — one of the most devastating defeats ever suffered by the British at the hands of indigenous forces. However, the British soon retaliated, especially in the Battle of Ulundi, where the Zulu army was decisively defeated.
As a result, the Zulu Kingdom was destroyed as an independent state and incorporated into the British Empire.
