At least three people were killed and several others critically injured on Monday after a truck driven by a drunk man ploughed through pedestrians and vehicles in the city of Indore, officials said.
Witnesses described scenes of panic as the truck struck a crowd in Shikshak Nagar, dragging motorcycles and bodies for several metres before catching fire. Police said the driver was intoxicated and had entered a restricted zone before midnight, crashing into at least 10 vehicles along the way.
“The driver has been caught and taken into custody,” Deputy Commissioner of Police Krishna Lalchandani told reporters.
Hospitals across Indore were placed on emergency alert, with local media reporting that some victims remain in critical condition.
The vehicle caught fire after a motorcycle became trapped beneath it, causing an explosion, according to eyewitness accounts.
Madhya Pradesh state chief minister Mohan Yadav called the incident “tragic” and ordered an investigation into how heavy vehicles were allowed inside the city at night.
