The DiamondMax D540X was Maxtor's approach to stuffing four platters in a drive while using a 5,400 RPM spindle speed, a rotational rate also used in Seagate U Series and Western Digital Protégé drives of the time. The 4D040H2, while not the lowest capacity member of the family, still uses a single 40 GB platter and also seems to be surprisingly common.
This also has some of the quietest ball bearings Maxtor ever used in a drive, only next to the DiamondMax 16 (basically a 5,400 RPM version of the Calypsos) if we don't count slimline drives. This was at a time when manufacturers (except Seagate, who were already using FDB motors) proceeded to use ball-bearing motors generally quieter than their predecessors, but still had the notable whine unique to ball-bearing motor drives. Despite Seagate's use of FDB in contrast, some still enjoy the sounds of old-school ball bearings, and I can't blame them.
As for the D540X's presence in OEM machines (and the consumer space in general), it was indeed somewhat common. Besides, Maxtor bore an enormous market share at this point as a result of having acquired Quantum's hard disk drive business, so why wouldn't OEMs use drives from the largest drive manufacturer at the time? At least these D540X's are nowhere close to the low of the IBM Deathstars. And, for an easy chance at getting a D540X, one could salvage a Windows XP PC from 2002 and hope it's a Maxtor and not a Seagate or Western Digital drive (or a Samsung?).
This drive, as previously mentioned, spins a single 40 GB platter at 5,400 RPM with two heads to cover each surface. It uses a cache buffer just 2 MB in size and is currently in perfect health, motor bearings included.
Drive model: Maxtor 4D040H2
Health: Perfect
