In this short from the series Did you know this about your faith? we present the Church’s teaching on perfect contrition. The Catechism explains: “When it arises from a love by which God is loved above all else, contrition is called ‘perfect.’ Such contrition remits mortal sins if it includes the firm resolution to have recourse to sacramental confession as soon as possible” (CCC 1452).
Just like the Good Thief on the cross found God’s mercy in his final moments (Gospel of Luke 23:43), there is the possibility of reconciliation even at the last instant of life. Only God knows the heart of the departed.
