This was as simple as is gets. We got to the location with lights all over, luckily they were sodium vapor. So we had to make it work. We ended up finding the darkest corner in the parking lot. I decided to shot the entire project at two apertures, f2.8 or f5.6 because I wanted to make sure we were dark in camera.
All we need was some backlight, but I didn't want it too complicated and I wanted it to look natural, aka motivated. Quasar Science to the rescue. With some gaff tape, and a little bit of climbing we were able to the 4 foot T8 bulbs where I wanted.
They gave a great look to the commercial and made things simple and easy.
I hope this breakdown shows you how easy we as cinematographers and filmmakers can get a great look at whats available. Oh yeah, this was filmed with a Sony A7Sii and Atomos recorder. We don't need a Alexa or RED to make awesome images.
