Presented at the Feminist Futurist Exhibition, Boston Center for the Arts (February 2020), this work explores the future of clothing through 3D printing, 4D printing, advanced materials, and wearable architectural design.
Julia Daviy is among the pioneers globally to develop flexible, wearable garments using industrial 3D printing techniques, as well as 4D-printed structures that introduce movement, adaptability, and responsive functionality into fashion.
The showcased pieces include:
• a 3D-printed suit (top and skirt) created entirely through digital design and additive manufacturing
• a 4D-printed garment integrating 3D-printed structures onto fabric, forming soft, complex, architectural geometries capable of transformation under heat and air flow — enabling new forms of responsive design behavior
This work investigates:
• how digital fabrication can radically reduce waste and enable precision manufacturing
• how garments can become dynamic, adaptive systems rather than static objects
• how future fashion can merge material science, technology, and sustainability
• the relationship between body, environment, movement, and design intelligence
By uniting environmental responsibility, technical innovation, and feminist future-thinking, these garments demonstrate a pathway toward ethical, intelligent, and regenerative design practices, challenging how fashion is produced, consumed, and experienced.
