Yap Seow Choong, having experienced diverse countries and cultures, guides us in exploring how to create the most suitable products and experiences for users through observation, empathy, and precise problem definition—core practices of design thinking. In today’s globalized world, design thinking helps us transcend cultural barriers and allows for a deep understanding of the needs and challenges of different markets, enabling solutions that offer real value.

While developing in the Chinese market, Yap discovered that simply replicating successful foreign models wouldn’t work. As the Chinese market grew increasingly open and affluent, he recognized the importance of understanding local consumer habits and preferences. By connecting culturally and offering tailored travel guides, he successfully won over users.

This achievement wasn’t just a commercial success, but also a prime example of applying design thinking in cross-cultural contexts—breaking away from tradition with a localized perspective and creating a new business model.

新书《我给新加坡写了一本马来西亚》，以新加坡人的角度，向新加坡人介绍马来西亚，记录了在马来西亚旅行的精华和美好。他说，设计思维 (Design Thinking) 是一种解决问题的方法，与我们的生活密不可分。

Graduated with a master's degree from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Yap Seow Choong once served as the publisher of the Lonely Planet guidebook. Under his leadership, the books have won many awards. He has also published more than 10 travel literature works in China, Taiwan, and Singapore, and is currently a columnist for Lianhe Zaobao and Guangming Daily.

His latest book introduces Malaysia to Singaporeans from the perspective of a Singaporean and records the essence and beauty of traveling in Malaysia.

Seow Choong said that design thinking is a way to solve problems, which is inseparable from our lives. He mentioned that whilst he is a publisher, he holds multiple roles and needs to use design thinking to solve various challenges in life.
