Night in the Woods is a 2017 indie game that focuses on the journey of a cat, Mae, who returns to her hometown Possum Springs after dropping out of College.
Upon returning home, Mae finds that the town has been economically suffering since the closure of the mines.
Her friends and family work in low-paying retail jobs that have physically and mentally trapped them in the only place they have ever lived.
These jobs offer little opportunity for the residents to live, a sentiment echoed by Mae’s father who tells her “workers are supposed to be able to have a life”.
Mae herself is trapped in Possum Springs by her mental health which has rendered her unable to exist outside of the comfort of her own town, however, this too will begin to affect her.
