Using a voltage meter to measure the state of your campervan leisure battery can be both inaccurate and confusing. You know what voltage your battery should be but you have no idea of how much energy you are using and how long your batteries are going to last before they are fully depleted.
You can get a better understanding of your energy usage and manage your leisure battery by using a battery monitor. A battery monitor measures the amount of energy going into and out of your leisure battery, and by keeping count it can accurately give you a State of Charge (SoC) value as a percentage of your total battery capacity.
The Renogy battery monitor uses a battery shunt which is capable of measuring loads of up to 500A, and the display panel can not only show you the SoC percentage, but also the current battery voltage, current reading, load power rating, and time remaining until empty.
Much like the in-home display on your smart meter, once you can measure your energy usage in your campervan you can be more aware of it. We have a number of high-draw appliances such as our 12v compressor fridge and our diesel heater, but the smaller current devices such as USB chargers that have been left on can soon add up and deplete your reserves.
In this video I show you what's included in the Renogy battery monitor package, explain how it works, and show you how I installed it in our self-converted Volkswagen T4 campervan.
