11 simple steps to stop cavities and holes forming in your teeth, as well as to stop the decay from getting worse if you already have it.
1) Minimise the frequency of any food or drink in your mouth, that isn’t water. The reason is that each time we eat something, bacteria in our mouth break down that food and turn it into acid. This acid is a big factor in making holes in our teeth. If you are eating or grazing throughout the day, your teeth are constantly in acid. I always give the example of eating a bag of chips – if you’re going to do it, eat the whole bag at once rather than over the whole day. So minimise frequency to breakfast, lunch, dinner
2) As hard as this is, avoid the consumption of high sugar items like candy/lollies or chocolate, because the bacteria can break it down extremely fast and create lots of acid which as we know, is bad for teeth
3) If you do want to eat something sugary, to minimise the acid increase we were talking about before, have it right after you’ve eaten anyway. For example if you’re going to have dessert, have it right after dinner.
4) After eating or drinking something acidic, rinse your mouth with water when you’re finished. Things like fruits and vegetables, soft drink or soda, alcohol. If you want to play it really safe, rinse with your mouth with water after every meal!
5) After eating, chewing sugar free gum is a great way to remove food stuck on the biting surfaces of your teeth, and also stimulate saliva to help get rid of the acid. If the chewing gum contains Xylitol, this reduces your risk even more! Link below to gum that I recommend.
6) Brush your teeth twice a day, morning and night. This removes any leftover food in your mouth, as well as the plaque that adheres to the tooth.
7) Don’t eat anything after your night time brush. If you do, this food can stay in your mouth for the 8 hours that you’re asleep, which can mean 8 hours of acid on the teeth!
8) Floss your teeth after brushing to remove any food that is stuck between the teeth that your brush couldn’t remove. People often ask which teeth they should floss, my answer is only floss the teeth that you want to keep!
9) Use a fluoride containing toothpaste, to help strengthen your teeth. For people with higher risk of decay or you know you have holes, if you can use a higher concentration fluoride like Neutrafluor 5000, this is even more effective. I’ve posted a link below as to where you can find a high fluoride concentration toothpaste.
10) Don’t rinse your mouth with water after brushing and instead, spit out the toothpaste. This keeps a very tiny amount of fluoride in your mouth to make them even stronger. This may feel weird the first few times you do it, but eventually you’ll get used to it.
11) For those that like to use a mouthrinse, make sure to buy a mouthrinse that has fluoride for the reasons I already mentioned. One good mouthrinse that you can use is called Colgate Neutrafluor 220. Use that after your night time brush. I’ve posted a linkbelow as to where you can find that or other products.
