The ceremony to purify Bhuana Alit "the small world" and Bhuana Agung "the universe". Melasti or 'Melis' ceremony is seen as the biggest purification ritual in the Balinese-Hindu religion. Hindi god symbols will be paraded into the sea by an enormous procession and everyone will be wearing the traditional costume, where white is the dominant color. If there is no sea close by, the purification procession will be held near any other close by holy water source. The Ceremony is held for purification purposes and to eradicate the human body and earth of badness and evil spirits.
Melasti ceremony is always held three or four days prior to Nyepi Day (Balinese New Year). Virtually every Balinese-Hindu will be participating in the ceremony and most of the beaches on Bali will be densely populated with people celebrating this ceremony. It's a unique experience, which will show the pure dedication that Balinese have for their religion.
To show respect and see the ceremony at a close distance, you should consider wearing the Balinese traditional attire.
