On the night of 12 June, a massive fire broke out in a Rohingya refugee camp in Delhi’s Madanpur Khadar area, near Kalindi Kunj. The fire destroyed over fifty homes in the camp, leaving about 270 refugees homeless.
“Over there [in Myanmar] our houses were burnt like this, from helicopters they shot missiles and set entire villages on fire,” Ismail, a resident of the refugee camp, said. “We fled from there and now were facing the same thing here.”
The refugees have now been displaced to the Kalindi Kunj camp site, where they stayed till it was burnt down in 2018. “The Delhi government has set up tents for us here now,” Minara, a resident, said on the night of 14 June. But the refugees appear to be unwanted there as well.
