In Tokyo, Japanese Shinto devotees embraced the cold on Sunday, January 11, by taking a plunge in icy waters as part of a traditional ritual to purify the soul and pray for the new year. Ninety-nine participants, including 17 women, knelt in freezing water wearing white loincloths and gowns, chanting prayers with hands clasped tightly. The practice, dating back to 1955, was inspired by a former shrine chief who first poured cold water over himself while praying for the community’s health and prosperity.
