ADG Episode 197 - Gladiator

Today on Ancient DOS Games, Gemini's taking a look at Gladiator, an overhead action game originally developed by the Forgotten Sages in 1995 and later made open source and turned into Open Gladiator by Snowstorm Entertainment in 2002.

There's not really a whole lot to this game, save for the fact it has an impressive amount of content given how basic it is. If you want a deep storyline with twists and turns and a sense of accomplishment, this is definitely not the game for you. If you want raw action with lots of character classes and even the ability to play split-screen with up to three other people, either cooperatively or competitively, then you've got a winner right here!

The game comes with a "Scenario Editor" as well for making your own levels, which you can then access simply by setting the current level number from within your current game.

There were a couple things I forgot to mention. One of them is that most areas have "Named Characters" which show up with a white outline and are far more powerful than regular characters. When they're defeated, a message will show up to let you know about it.

Another thing I didn't mention is that multiple AI teams can be present in each level, indicated by the colour of the minions. Since everything is a free-for-all, the AI from one team WILL fight the AI from other teams, so letting these teams wipe each other out is a good way to survive when the situation seems otherwise unwinnable.
