Xanthorrhoea or commonly known as Grasstree or Blackboy, epitomise the Australian bush. Iconic to this land they are majestic, ancient, hardy and thrive in nutrient poor soils.
All 28 species of Xanthorrhoea are native only to Australia. The common Grasstree to WA is the Xanthorrhoea Preissii and grows naturally in sand, loam or gravelly soils, to a height of 5 metres and have a lifespan of up to 600 years. These magnificent plants respond well to wildfire by flowering profusely the following winter.
The Grasstree is important to the Aboriginal people across Australia. The resin from Grasstrees is traditionally used as glue in spear making and to patch water containers, whilst the flower spikes make fishing spears and fire sticks. The tough seed pods are used as cutting implements and the flower’s nectar forms a sweet, slightly fermented drink. The nectar also attracts a wide variety of insects, birds and mammals.
