By mid-1941, tension inside the German high command was boiling.
General Heinz Guderian, architect of Blitzkrieg, believed Moscow was the decisive target.
He argued that seizing the Soviet capital would cripple command, rail networks, and morale.
Every delay, he warned, allowed the Red Army to regroup.
Adolf Hitler saw things differently.
Obsessed with Ukraine’s resources and ideological goals, he dismissed Guderian’s warnings.
Their exchanges grew heated—Guderian pressed, Hitler snapped back.
In August 1941, Hitler imposed his will.
Panzer Group 2 was ordered south toward Kiev, breaking the straight drive on Moscow.
The encirclement succeeded tactically.
But the cost was time, fuel, and momentum.
When German forces turned back toward Moscow, autumn mud and Soviet resistance had hardened.
The window for victory was gone.
The clash between Guderian’s military logic and Hitler’s political obsession became one of the most consequential arguments of World War II.
