St. Paul’s famous “Ode to Love” identifies three theological virtues that “remain” in light of God’s revelation in the person of Jesus Christ: faith, hope, and love—the greatest of these being love. But despite their supernatural character, the theological virtues are not alien intrusions of grace into an otherwise self-enclosed order of nature, but the unveiling of creation’s deepest truth: they disclose what nature and human life was always-already ordered towards. In fact, the three theological virtues are fundamental categories of human life regardless of one’s religious convictions, realized to varying degrees as essential aspects of all purposeful action. They are fulfilled and elevated into their properly “theological” form when the life of man becomes ordered towards its only true end—the supernatural life of God.
