The Sinking River, in and around Dunmore, Galway, witnesses history: Lurgan Bronze Age 50 foot Canoe, Turlough O'Connor King of Ireland, longest serving King in Ireland, The Cross of Tuam/Cong, prisoners of war, town and castle burnings, Anglo-Norman "settlers" and the Irish attacks, people of Dunmore burning their own town, Augustinian monks in Cong, Clonmacnoise and Dunmore. The river also is an important salmon and trout spawning source as well having a long tradition of water mills for local needs.
